The primary duty of the Tactical Action Officer (TAO) is to execute tactical decisions and fight the ship. The TAO is responsible for the tactical employment of shipboard weapons systems and must have a comprehensive understanding of the operational environment, as well as the capabilities of the ship and its systems. This role encompasses making real-time decisions in combat situations, ensuring that the ship can effectively engage threats while maintaining the safety of the crew and the ship itself.

In contrast, while monitoring navigation, supervising bridge teams, or assisting in engine and rudder control are crucial tasks aboard a ship, they fall under the responsibilities of other personnel, such as the Officer of the Deck (OOD) or the ship's engineering crew. The TAO must focus on combat readiness and ensure that the ship can respond effectively to any tactical situation that may arise.
